Babouins, corbeaux, dauphins, éléphants… depuis des années, les éthologues décrivent les réactions étonnantes, et souvent émouvantes, de différentes espèces face à la mort de leurs congénères. Aujourd’hui, les scientifiques cherchent à comprendre ces comportements.
Comment les animaux réagissent-ils lorsqu’ils découvrent le corps d’un de leurs congénères ? Y aurait-il une typologie de comportements selon la complexité biologique et sociale des espèces ? Que se cache-t-il derrière la diversité de ces comportements : réactions innées d’ordre physiologique ? Instinct de survie? Peut-on parler de chagrin et de deuil dans le règne animal ? Se pourrait-il que certains animaux complexes aient développé une forme de conscience de la mort proche de la nôtre?
Quand une nouvelle science tente de percer les mystères qui entourent la mort dans le monde animal.

Baboons, crows, dolphins, elephants… for years, ethologists have been describing the astonishing, and often moving, reactions of different species to the death of their fellow creatures. Today, scientists are seeking to understand these behaviors.
How do animals react when they discover the body of one of their fellow creatures? Is there a typology of behavior based on the biological and social complexity of species? What lies behind the diversity of these behaviors: innate physiological reactions? Survival instinct? Can we speak of grief and mourning in the animal kingdom? Could it be that certain complex animals have developed a form of awareness of death similar to our own?
